Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab American Gods Swatches and Review

Press Sample

What comes to mind when you think of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab? For me, it's vials of potions and scents that are completely unique. I have a few of their scents, one of which was made for the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia, and it has notes of old books (my fav!), leather, balsam, and raw vanilla. As soon as I read the description, I knew that I had to have it. But, I digress, we're not here to talk about fragrances today, we're here to talk about the amazing new American Gods nail polish collection that is amazing from the candy pink crelly of Easter to the chartreuse and gold glitter of Coin Trick. Come with me, and we'll travel the world of Neil Gaiman's American Gods after the jump!

Technical Boy

Dusty Orange creme holo

There aren't enough orange polishes in this world, especially orange holos. This GORGEOUS polish is super opaque, and easily covers in 2 coats, and is pretty much a dream.

Opacity scale (1-5): 4.5

Finish: Holographic creme, 1-2 coats to be opaque

Laura

Dusty lilac with shimmer that shifts from blueish purple to coppery pink and scattered holo

I love the dustiness of this unique purple polish, the shift is absolutely gorgeous on this one, and I couldn't stop looking at my hands when I was wearing it!

Opacity Scale (1-5): 3

Finish: Shimmer, 2 coats to be opaque

Shadow Moon

Smoky deep grey base with purple & teal duo shimmer and gold flakes

I'm going to say this over and over with this collection, but this one is a stunner. The deep grey base sets off the duochrome shimmer, which so easily shifts in this polish, and the gold flakes are really just the icing on the proverbial cake.

Opacity Scale (1-5): 3

Finish: Shimmer, 2 coats to be opaque

Mr. World

Pale sage creme with gold, black, blue and silver flakes

The best way that I can describe this polish is if you took a wad of $100 bills and pocket change and threw it in your blender, you'd have Mr. World! This is a unique one!

Opacity scale (1-5): 3

Finish: Flaky, 2 coats to be opaque

America's New Gods

Bittersweet chocolate linear holo

This polish is the one that caught my attention and led me to this beautiful collection when BPAL posted it on their Twitter. I knew that I had to have it in my life. The holo is strong with this one, and it's such a great color!

Opacity scale (1-5): 4

Finish: Linear holo, 2 coats to be opaque

Becoming Thunder

Peachy pink holo with golden green shimmer

This is a delicate and borderline girly holo, but that golden green just brings it into awesome territory. It's like if rosé met champagne and created a tasty, bubbly, hybrid delight to brighten up everyone's brunches.

Opacity scale (1-5): 3

Finish: Holo/Shimmer, 2 coats to be opaque

Mr. Nancy's Gloves

Chartreuse-tinged lemon yellow with golden yellow shimmer and scattered holo micro glitter.

What a happy polish! I love yellow, and this is definitely no exception! I've actually worn it a few times in the short time that I've had it. I love the warmth that the golden shimmer adds to it, and it's cool on it's own, or with nail art (see my Instagram).

Opacity scale (1-5): 2.5

Finish: Shimmer, 3 coats to be opaque

The Intangibles

Deep olive green metallic that shifts from green to gold to a bluish teal.

WOW. This polish is so pigmented. It covered easily in 1 coat, but I did 2 for good measure. It's SUCH a pretty polish, and as soon as I put it on, I went and showed Chris how cool it was. There is so much glow and shimmer to this one, and it's amazing.

Opacity scale (1-5): 4

Finish: Shimmer, 1-2 coats to be opaque

The Blood Must Flow

Blood red jelly with red and orange flakes

This is a blood clot in nail polish form, and it's everything. It's rare for me to like a red enough to actually want to wear it beyond swatching, but this is one I definitely want to wear. It's the perfect polish for those days that you want to wear the blood of thine enemies on your fingertips. Beware, foes!

Opacity scale (1-5): 2.5

Finish: Flaky, 2 coats to be opaque

Easter

Cotton candy pink crelly with multicolor iridescent flakes

You know that movie Despicable Me? This polish is like they stuffed both Agnes and her unicorn that was so fluffy she could die into one small nail polish bottle. Its like cotton candy and rainbows met for some sexy rendezvous in a BPAL nail polish bottle. It's like the essence of happiness and unicorns condensed into a nail polish. You get the idea.

Opacity scale (1-5): 2.5

Finish: Flaky, 3 coats to be opaque

Zorya Polunochnaya

Inky Midnight Blue with scattered micro holo and teeny tiny sparks of gold.

Is this the polish that inspired Van Gogh's Starry Night? It's possible. The deep blue base twinkles with the subtle hints of scattered holographic micro glitter, and I swear I can see Orion's Belt on my pinky. What do you see when you look at the stars?

Opacity scale (1-5): 3.5

Finish: Scattered holo, 2 coats to be opaque

Czernobog

Fiery red, orange, and gold shifting flakes in a clear base.

This is a flake topper that works well over several other polishes in this collection, but I especially love it over The Intangibles! It's like the burning embers of a fire that's been burning deep into the night. Is it time to summon some spirits, or time to bust out the S'mores ingredients? Why not both?

In the above image, the index and middle finger have two coats that are sponged on, and the ring and pinky are 2 coats that are just brushed on.

Opacity scale (1-5): 2

Finish: Metallic flaky, 3+ coats to be opaque

Bilquis

Deep grapey fuchsia with shimmer that shifts from purple to red.

Syrupy grapey goodness with just enough shifting shimmer to make things interesting.

Opacity scale (1-5): 3.5

Finish: Shimmer, 2 coats to be opaque

The Jeweled Spider

Black base with shifting burgundy and green shimmer

This polish was a jewel-encrusted spider brooch inching up the fur stole of an ancient heiress. I dig this one, I mean just LOOK at that shift from burgundy to green! Such a cool and elegant polish.

Opacity scale (1-5): 3.5

Finish: Shimmer, 2 coats to be opaque

Coin Trick

Chartreuse and gold holographic glitter in a clear base

Sparkle city, this one. The sun absolutely lights this polish on fire like a leprechaun disco ball! The mix of the chartreuse glitter and the gold glitter is a fun combo. This make s a great topper over other colors (Mr. Nancy's Gloves?!), or sponge it on for opaque, disco-y goodness. It is a topcoat eater, so prepare yourself.

Opacity scale (1-5): 2

Finish: Glitter, 3+ coats to be opaque

Mister Wednesday

Pinky gold holo with pink shimmer and coppery orange micro glitter

This one is a hidden treasure! Not only do you get that added pink flash, but those specks of gorgeous coppery orange, too?! Yes, please!

Opacity scale (1-5): 3

Finish: Linear holo with shimmer, 2 coats to be opaque

What do you think? will you be picking up any of the BPAL American Gods polishes? My favorites are probably Technical Boy, Laura, The Intangibles, America's New Gods, and Shadow Moon. (as if I could pick favorites, because I honestly love them all!)

According to the BPA website, this collection is a charitable, not-for-profit venture, and all proceeds from every single bottle go to the CBLDF, which works to preserve and protect the First Amendment rights of the comics community.

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (BPAL) polishes can be purchased at BlackPhoenixTradingPost.com for $9.75 each.
